Meet Sophie

Biological Engineering Intern in Barcelona

From student researcher to international innovator.

Sophie was looking for hands-on experience in biological engineering and we placed her with a full-time internship with the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in Barcelona.

During her internship, she worked on advanced biomedical engineering projects including:

  • Fabricating “organ-on-a-chip” layers and microfluidic systems in PMMA
  • Redesigning structures using 3D resin printed molds for PDMS
  • Developing a new organ component for in vitro testing solutions
  • Collaborating within an international research environment

Her experience quickly expanded beyond the internship itself. Sophie participated in a competitive biological engineering hackathon where her team won funding for their proposed biotech project, which concluded in Barcelona the following spring. Following the success of her placement, Sophie was invited to return to continue her internship work and contribute toward future research opportunities.

Meet Bela

Volunteer Working with Horses & Special Needs Youth

Combining compassion, animal care, and community impact.

Bela joined our volunteer program with a long-term goal of becoming a veterinary technician. Through her placement experience in Barcelona, she volunteered with Ananda Marga and Hípica La Foixarda, supporting horse care and equine-centered community activities.

Her volunteer responsibilities included:

  • Daily horse care and stable support
  • Assisting with feeding, grooming, and wellbeing routines
  • Supporting equine-based activities and community events
  • Helping facilitate horse programs for local children with special needs

The experience allowed Bela to gain practical animal-care exposure while contributing to programs that positively impact local families and children.
